Hey, I’m Mariliana
I founded SHK in 2010, after years shooting weddings. Weddings are beautiful but predictable, you always know what’s coming next. Families aren’t like that. Kids see the world completely differently than adults, and they don’t perform for the camera. If a four-year-old doesn’t want their photo taken, you can’t talk them into it. You have to earn it. You have to play. Documenting how families see and experience the world, with all that unpredictability, is what hooked me into this work. I love that.
I’m not there to judge anyone. I’m there for your family to feel seen, and to make pictures of how you’d like to remember yourselves.
Photography is part of a larger thing for me. I’m deep into children’s literature, storytelling, and art-making. I run a really good kids book club and I ran Akadequi, a creative project that brought together kids, recycled materials, and public spaces in NYC. It’s all connected.
In 2023, I moved my family to Spain. I grew up in Caracas, spent 20 years there, then 20 years in New York. After four decades on that side of the world, it felt like time to cross the ocean and try something different. SHK grew with me. We now have a team of brilliant photographers in NYC, and I visit twice a year to shoot alongside them. I also photograph families in Europe, and what I’m totally into is that lately I have been photographing some of my favorite Brooklyn families in France and Amsterdam! The adventure continues.

Michelle thrives in unpredictable moments, bringing the energy and creativity of her Mexico City upbringing to every NYC session. When sessions feel wild, her mind kicks into overdrive to create magic out of the mess. When she’s not behind the camera, she’s exploring the city with her family or working on her novel.

Her superpower with kids is patience and genuine curiosity, plus two boys and a whippet named Bert means she’s seen it all.
