When Your NYC Apartment is Too Dark: Creative Outdoor Newborn Sessions

We love newborn sessions at home – there’s something magical about capturing your baby in the space where you’ll create so many memories together. But let’s be real: not every NYC apartment has the natural light we need for those dreamy newborn photos.

And that’s totally okay.

When Home Isn’t the Perfect Setup

Sometimes your apartment faces north and barely gets any sunlight. Sometimes you’re in a basement unit or between tall buildings that block the light. Sometimes you have gorgeous space but tiny windows. We’ve seen it all across Brooklyn and Manhattan, and we’ve learned that the “perfect” setup isn’t always at home.

The good news? We make it work, we make it beautiful, and we make it YOU.

A Recent Astoria Session That Proves Our Point

SHK photographer Sasha recently worked with a family whose apartment just didn’t have the natural light we needed. When we talked over the phone and she described her space, she was concerned about the lighting – and it was clear it was too dark for the photos she wanted.

So we figured out together that it was better to do the session outside. The map we know best is the one from NYC, so we suggested one of our favorite spots in Astoria. We love scouting places before we meet for sessions.

The results speak for themselves. The baby looks peaceful and content, the family looks relaxed, and this outdoor solution gave them exactly what they were hoping for.

Why Our Stylish Hip Kids Outdoor Newborn Sessions Work

We know how to find the right light. We look for soft, natural light that’s ideal for newborn photography. No harsh shadows, no need to move around your apartment looking for the best spot.

Babies love fresh air. Many newborns actually settle better outside. There’s something about that gentle breeze and natural environment that’s soothing.

NYC parks are your backyard. I always felt Fort Greene Park was our backyard when my kids were little. That’s what’s so cool about a city like this – you have amazing outdoor spaces just steps from your door.

You bring your favorite blanket, we find the perfect spot to use it. We come with everything else we need to create that cozy newborn feeling even when we’re not in your living room.

Perfect for families with toddlers too. In this Astoria session, there was also a sweet toddler girl who had space to run around while we focused on her baby sibling. We always include the whole family and take individual pictures of siblings as well – you as a whole unit and each precious piece of it.

The Creative Process

When we realize your apartment lighting won’t work for the photos you deserve, we don’t just wing it. We scout nearby parks and outdoor spaces that offer:

  • Soft, even lighting
  • Quiet spots away from crowds
  • Beautiful natural backgrounds
  • Easy access for families with a brand new baby

The goal is always the same: capture those precious early moments in a way that feels authentic to your family, whether that’s in your bedroom or under the trees in Prospect Park.

Your NYC Newborn Session, Your Way

Here’s what we’ve learned after 15 years doing family pictures: the location matters way less than the feeling. These Astoria park photos capture the same love, tenderness, and new-family magic as any in-home session.

Sometimes the best plan is being flexible with your plan.

Whether your apartment is flooded with gorgeous light or you’re dealing with a cave-like situation, we’ll figure out the perfect solution together. Because every NYC family deserves beautiful newborn photos, regardless of their apartment’s lighting situation.

The city gives us so many options – let’s use them all.

Worried about lighting in your apartment? Book a call with us and we’ll discuss the best approach for your specific space and situation. We always have a plan B (and C and D) ready to go.
