Why Is It So Important to Take Newborn Photos?
Newborn photography is all about capturing those precious first moments. They’re only this tiny once! Those squishy cheeks, the way they sleep on your chest, that little hand gripping your finger, their curious stare, their hungry cries, that newborn smell. And then—before you know it—they start smiling!
This newborn photography guide will help you prepare for your photoshoot, ensuring you’re ready to capture these fleeting moments and preserve the love and connection between you, your baby, and your family—so you can hold onto these early days forever.
When to Take Newborn Photos
First Two Weeks: Sleepy and Curled Up
During the first two weeks, newborns tend to be extra sleepy and naturally curled up, making this the perfect time for those peaceful, snuggly shots. Their tiny hands, little yawns, and dreamy expressions create timeless images that capture the pure essence of newborn life.
Weeks 3-8: Awake and Engaging
As your baby grows, they’ll start waking up more, making eye contact, and stretching out. If you’d love more photos with your baby awake, this might be your ideal window. Plus, as the weeks go by, you’ll likely have a bit more energy, too!
Both stages are beautiful—it just depends on what feels right for you and your family.
What Time of Day Is Best?
Since newborns don’t have a set nap schedule yet, the best time for a photoshoot is based on your home’s natural light. Take note of when the light is best in the rooms you want to use. If you have older kids, also think about the time of day they’ll be happiest and most cooperative.
How to Prepare Your Space for the Photoshoot
While we love capturing real life as it happens, a little decluttering can make a big difference in your photos. No need for perfection—just focus on the areas where we’ll be shooting (and yes, closets make excellent hiding spots!).
But if you love the “life is messy, this is parenting” aesthetic, we’re all in. Just let us know, and we’ll make it look amazing.
What to Wear for a Newborn Photoshoot
Dress for Comfort and Style
You, your baby, and your family should feel comfortable and confident. No need to stress over outfits—but maybe save the PJs for another time (unless your PJs are truly fabulous).
- Soft, cozy fabrics work best—especially for your newborn (babies and jeans don’t mix!).
- Neutrals and soft colors photograph beautifully, but we also love and know how to photograph bright colors!

What to Expect During Your Session
Our newborn sessions are relaxed, baby-led, and all about connection. Here’s what you can expect:
- A Stylish & Hip Kids chill photographer who’s there to document your family in the most honest and beautiful way—no weird, cheesy poses. We’ll guide you, but nothing forced.
- Capturing your baby as they are—sleepy, awake, stretching, yawning, or snuggled in your arms.
- Family-centered moments—parents, siblings, and even pets are welcome! This is your family’s love story.
- We can embrace soft, natural light for a dreamy, timeless feel, or opt for a more bold, fashionable look with flash.
- Comfort first—Need a break for feeding or a diaper change? No rush. We go at your baby’s pace.
When to Book Your Newborn Photography Session
The best time to reach out? End of your second trimester or early third trimester. We’ll pick a tentative date, and once your baby arrives, you or your partner can confirm.
Newborn sessions happen on weekdays, last about two hours, and we never book anything right after—so we can take our time, enjoy the moment, and never feel rushed.
